Tui Na (Chinese Deep Tissue Massage)

Chinese Deep Tissues Massage, also called Tui Na, is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine. There is a difference between Tui Na and other kinds of massage. Tui Na works by breaking down scar tissue and crystallization, thus restoring proper muscular balance and bone structure. It can also increase the blood circulation to injured and aging areas that have decreased blood supply. It accomplishes this through controlled manual manipulation. “Deep” doesn’t necessarily mean “hard.” With the proper technique, muscles deep in the body can be reached with a minimum of pressure. Tui Na is used as a method to treat disease, pain syndromes, tennis elbow, digestive problems, insomnia, and stroke rehabilitation. This method is used in treating muscle, tendon and ligament injuries, and crippling diseases. It is remarkably effective for skeletal structures that lie deep within the body that cannot be reached with the fingers in regular massage. It is done transversely on muscle fibers and has no relationship to relaxation massage.

Cupping

This therapy has been greatly popularized by Olympic athletes and while it is trendy now, it is not new. It dates to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The cups may be made of Glass, Bamboo, Earthenware or Silicone. Cupping greatly helps with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

Moxa

Moxibustion or Moxa is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” is burned on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is too warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris), but it can be made of other substances as well. Practitioners often do both acupuncture and Moxibustion in the same clinic session when appropriate to the diagnosis and treatment strategy. Practitioners believe that the therapies increase each other’s effectiveness when used together.

Herbal Remedies

Herbology evolved into a healing art in China through observation and usage. This knowledge was compiled and passed down and has continued to be refined through the centuries. Herbs, like everything else in Chinese Medicine, are classified by their energetic qualities and functions. They are defined with terms like warming, cooling, detoxifying or purging which describes the overall energetic configuration of the herb. These herbal remedies are made from a mix of roots, stems, bark, leaves, and flowers of many plants, as well as some minerals and animal products. They are taken by over one billion people in Asia and have been used for thousands of years. These remedies are a careful balance of up to 400 different herbs.

Tui Na Health Benefits

Have you experienced relief from muscular or structural disorders through massage or adjustments only have them return a short time later? In the cases of Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis where muscle tendons, ligaments, and bones become twisted and distorted, it is not enough to change your diet or to cleanse your colon. You must have a deep tissue massage to restore the physical and chemical balance. This technique so simple yet so powerful. We can guarantee no matter what the cause; whether it be a work injury, sports injury, a muscle disease or disorder; Tui Na will benefit greatly in your healing process.

Acupuncture Health Benefits

The World Health Organization has cited acupuncture as a treatment for over 43 different conditions. Some of these conditions are: postoperative pain, nausea induced by chemotherapy, morning sickness during pregnancy, and anesthesia. The National Institutes of Health panel also called acupuncture a useful adjunct and acceptable treatment for a variety conditions such as fibromyalgia, stroke rehabilitation, asthma, headache, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Using acupuncture to treat the health problems of people has been growing in popularity. A Kaiser Permanente study conducted in 1996 found that 57.2 percent of primary care physicians in Northern California used or recommended acupuncture in the previous year. And per the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, nearly one out of every 10 adults in the United States has tried acupuncture.

Moxa Health Benefits

The use of Moxa has been beneficial in eliminating:

  • Pain due to injury or arthritis, especially in “cold” patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat
  • Digestive problems and irregular elimination
  • Gynecological and obstetrical conditions, including breech presentation in late term pregnancy
  • Protection against cold and flu strains
Herb’s Health Benefits

Chinese herbs are safer than western pharmaceuticals and rarely have unpleasant side effects. A professional prescribing Chinese herbs is usually able to eliminate or substantially reduce symptoms such as nausea, insomnia, or headaches in a relatively short time, but deep healing may take a good deal longer depending on the type of illness and duration. These herbs are a complement to the body’s own healing abilities. Their effect is very subtle but highly effective.
Individuals that have a chronic illness and would like to try Chinese herbs should consult a Chinese physician that is knowledgeable and experienced in using the herbs. Those that would like to expand their culinary knowledge and taste experience can try experimenting to get to know qualities, texture, and taste. They can be purchased at an Oriental grocery store or Chinese pharmacy. They are usually easy to use and inexpensive.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has over 3,500 years history in China and is used to prevent and treat disease. This ancient technique which has been greatly popularized is becoming an increasingly important component to medicine world-wide. Acupuncture is done by putting thin needles into the skin at selected points to help direct and influence energy in your body where it may have been blocked. In less than 25 years, Acupuncture has become a form of licensed and regulated medicine throughout America. Today, acupuncture is practiced in hospitals and clinics nationwide and covered by government and private health insurance providers. Health insurance companies are becoming increasingly aware of the cost effectiveness of acupuncture as a form of health care.
